Castle had no intention of pursuing an acting career - he was an aspiring filmmaker himself - but Carpenter has said that he liked Castle's physique and gait, so he put him in the mask.Ĭastle didn't act much outside of Halloween, but he did go on to have a successful career in Hollywood as a director and screenwriter. Castle met Carpenter while they were both studying cinema at USC, and played a balloon-like alien in his debut film, Dark Star (1974). Many performers have worn the mask of Michael Myers over the years, but Nick Castle is the one who started it all. When she's not acting, she writes children's books, records podcasts, and plays World of Warcraft. She received a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival in 2021, and she's set to appear in two major films in 2023: Disney's Haunted Mansion and Lionsgate's Borderlands. Experiencing something of a later-career renaissance, she starred on the horror-comedy series Scream Queens, headlined a new trilogy of highly successful Halloween sequels, and turned in beloved supporting performances in high-profile ensemble films like Knives Out (2019) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), receiving an Oscar nomination for the latter. Her most prominent mid-career highlights like A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and Freaky Friday (2003) demonstrated her stellar comedic talents, but she also excelled in action movies like Blue Steel (1990) and True Lies (1994) - and, of course, she came back for two more Halloweens around the turn of the century.Ĭurtis took a step back from acting for a spell in the late-2000s and early-2010s to prioritize her family, though she still made several on-screen appearances in voiceovers and small supporting roles in films such as Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) and Veronica Mars (2014). She would continue to work steadily across multiple genres for the next couple of decades. Soon after, however, her supporting performance in Trading Places (1983) introduced her to mainstream audiences unfamiliar with her horror projects. After her breakout success as Laurie Strode in Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis cemented her title of "scream queen" by continuing to work in horror films for a few years, including Prom Night (1980), Terror Train (1980), and John Carpenter's The Fog (1980), and also returned to Haddonfield for Halloween II (1981). The film's young lead went on to become its most recognizable alumnus by a considerable margin.

The New York Knicks made the playoffs for the first time since 2004, but this was their first playoff appearance as an above-.500 team since 2001. In addition, for the first time, both franchises would open their playoff runs at home. Their in–state rivals, the Orlando Magic, entered their fifth consecutive postseason. They would also open the playoffs at home for the first time since 2006. The Miami Heat entered their third consecutive postseason, and their first in the Big 3 era of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh. They also clinched the NBA's best record for the first time since 1997, guaranteeing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Chicago Bulls achieved several "firsts" since 1998: the East's best record, a Central Division title, and over 60 victories. The Denver Nuggets entered their eighth consecutive postseason and their first since 1995 without Carmelo Anthony on the roster. The Utah Jazz missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006. This would also mark the start of a ten season postseason drought for the Suns. The Phoenix Suns, despite a run to the Western Conference finals last postseason, missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Unlike their previous three appearances, in which they were swept in the first round, The Grizzlies broke their trend by winning Game 1 of their series against the Spurs, their first playoff win in franchise history. The Memphis Grizzlies also made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They lost in the first round to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games, and would not return to the playoffs until 2015. However, this was also their final postseason appearance before the franchise was renamed the Pelicans before the 2013–14 season. The New Orleans Hornets also returned to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. The Portland Trail Blazers entered their third consecutive postseason. The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the playoffs with their first Northwest Division title under this incarnation. The Dallas Mavericks entered their eleventh consecutive postseason, and their eleventh straight appearance having won 50+ games in the regular season. However, this would be their first since 2007 without posting the top seed in the Western Conference. The two time defending champions, the Los Angeles Lakers entered their sixth consecutive postseason. They also entered as the top seed in the Western Conference for the first time since 2006, in addition to entering the postseason with 50+ regular season wins for the twelfth consecutive season. The San Antonio Spurs entered their fourteenth consecutive postseason. The tournament concluded with the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks defeating the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat 4 games to 2 in the NBA Finals. For instance, as long as you’re belted, it’s OK to look back to a child in the back seat for three to five seconds. But you can’t take a nap.Īs I discovered in my short closed-course test-drive, some flexibility is built into the system. You’re allowed to take your hands off the steering wheel, to take your eyes off the road, and even to turn your head to the side. In position means you can’t recline more than about four inches from your normal driving position. Many automakers have said that they'll skip Level 3 automation because they believe the conditions are vague in interpretation, and it may be dangerous to immediately hand all driving functions back to a human that isn't required to pay attention to the road.īut for Mercedes, those conditions are quite straightforward: The driver has to stay in position and monitor the system. In the five SAE levels of driving automation, Level 3 is conditional automation. Why Mercedes sees Level 3 as a big step forward The system always uses multiple methods to make sure it’s on the proper roadway, adding in camera and lidar data, as well as road marker information, and it doesn’t ever go only by GPS, as it’s feasible that could be manipulated. Roughly eight years of data went into the mapping of scenarios, including various studies on what works and what doesn’t for the handoff of control back to the driver. In addition to years of engineering, it’s involved data protection officers, ethics experts, lawyers, and various compliance levels. Mercedes emphasizes that Drive Pilot hasn’t been developed quickly. With it, Mercedes claims accuracy to the centimeter instead of the meter. A high-precision GPS system is the foundation, digitally fused with anonymized data for lidar, camera, radar, and ultrasound, plus a digital HD map with information on road geometry and more. The 10-second handoff is a big deal, requiring additional hardware not just for redundancy but precision and accuracy. Beyond 10 seconds, it will slowly bring the car to a stop if there’s still no response. Then three seconds later there’s a haptic buzz of the seat belt, followed by a second buzz a few seconds later. It first issues a prompt requiring an “OK” click of the left steering-wheel toggle. If the system encounters a situation in which it wants to hand off control to the driver for any reason. That’s less energy than Audi’s earlier Traffic Jam Assist, which had been U.S.-bound for the A8 but never arrived. The system carries two separate computational layers and has more computational and sensing smarts than an A380 Airbus, according to Matthias Struck, a senior safety engineer at Mercedes-Benz, while drawing less than 50 watts of power. Redundancy in the steering, braking, wheel speed sensors, and more-like an entire second set of wiring for the steering-helps make sure that even if vehicle systems fail, Drive Pilot can provide a 10-second handoff for the driver to take control. White lights at the 10 and 2 positions of the steering wheel indicate it’s ready to be engaged, and green lights indicate it’s at Level 3.īut Drive Pilot’s software is far more advanced. It was easy to acclimate to how Drive Pilot operates, but nerve-wracking given the video-game-like rate of potential mishaps a team of experts threw at us on the test course. Mercedes is aiming to get regulatory approval for its use under similar conditions in California and Nevada by the end of the year, and it’s prepared to extend the same legal backing for liability should something go wrong.īuilding on adaptive cruise control with a lot of brains and sensing The system could be on LA freeways next year, though. For now, it applies only on “suitable motorway sections in Germany” up to 37 mph, and requires one car ahead to engage the system. Level 3 Drive Pilot is offered now in Europe in the S-Class and EQS, at an extra cost of 5,000 euros and 7,430 euros ($5,100 and $7,600), respectively. Even though Level 3 Drive Pilot doesn’t offer the high-speed operation and hands-free lane-change features of GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise or Tesla Enhanced Autopilot, it does completely hand off the task of driving (and the responsibility) to the car in some very specific conditions, to give drivers some moments to themselves in the car-moments that might not be so nerve-wracking.
